I ❤️ NEW YAWK! 🗽🍎🗽🍎 New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a bill into law Monday that creates a statewide doula directory aimed at helping new mothers and their newborn children. The new law aims to reduce barriers in finding doulas, who provide physical, emotional and informational support before, during, and after childbirth. The state Department of Health will establish and maintain the directory on its website. Doula services will also be covered for all Medicaid enrollees starting on Jan. 1 “Our maternal and infant mortality rates are a disgrace,” Hochul said. “Expanding access to doula services is an effective, evidence-based strategy to support expectant parents and allow their babies to grow and thrive. Just this one sentence lets me know that my impact on parents of newborns is making a huge difference in their postpartum experience. It's also healing for me as well. Until my own postpartum doula rescued me (yes I use the word rescue!) I was having a miserable time during the first 6 weeks postpartum with my first born and my doula turned it all around 180 degrees! Halloween is a wonderful time to enjoy all that is being offered in Westchester County I am always quoting my own #postpartumdoula, who said to me 21 years ago, "You gotta get out of the house!" It's so important for their mental health, and it gives them a chance to meet other moms, which take it from me, is key 🔑 to surviving the first year of motherhood! The Heartbreak 💔 and Joy 😊of a #postpartumdoula ... This month, I said 👋 goodbye to three clients and their wonderful families. There is a sadness ☹️ that comes with this job, and fleeting as it may be, the last days 📅 of a contract are always a little hard for me to say goodbye. It doesn't matter how many weeks their contract covered, especially since most families wind up extending them anyway... Today was the last day of a 4-week contract, and there were no goodbyes to be had because my client called me early this morning to say she had Covid 😢. No hug goodbye to the adorable toddler 🙋‍♀️ who I read books to every morning before school, none for the ever growing 9 week old 👶 baby and none for the 🤱mom who I loved chitchatting with in the kitchen while I cooked 👩‍🍳 the family nutritious 🥗 meals... The lack of closure left me with a hole in my gut and a wish that this horrible virus 🦠 was a thing of the past, but I digress.... Now the joy 😊 part... With the extra time on my hands this morning, I visited my 📬 mailbox and lo and behold... I found an invitation 💌 to a 1st birthday party 🥳for one of my clients from last year!!! This bit of happiness in an envelope turned this doula's frown ☹️ upside-down 🙃 Next month will bring two new families onto my schedule and I can't wait to learn what kinds of connections it will bring... One thing I let all of my clients know is that once I'm their doula, always their doula. How does a #postpartumdoula work from home when their client is sick? You cook them a nutritious meal and deliver it to their front porch! A day in the life of Jennifer Tawil Westchester Doula ... 6:00 am wake up 7:00 am work out with trainer and a friend 8:30 am eye doctor appointment 10:30 am arrive at client home 11:00 am drive to local Stop and Shop for dinner recipe items 12:00 pm make chicken salad from left over chicken originally from fajita dinner recipe made last week 12:30 pm make chicken salad sandwiches for mom and dad clients 12:45 pm care for baby while mom enjoys her lunch 1:00 pm start working on dinner recipe 1:30 pm boil eggs for egg salad and create it 2:00 pm while meatballs bake, make overnight oats and chia seed pudding recipe for client breakfasts 2:30 pm wash all items used with breast pump 4:00 pm care for baby while client mom naps 4:30 pm late lunch break 5:40 pm wash and dry all items used to cook dinner recipe (10:30 am to 5:30 pm frequently check on mom client making sure she has enough water to drink and enough to eat) 5:45 pm leave for home 6:30 pm pick up young adult son for summer volunteer interview 7:20 pm eat dinner in the car on the way to a meeting in 10 minutes 7:30 pm attend town board meeting 9:45 pm arrive home and deal with recycling and kitchen clean up 10:00 pm bedtime #postpartumdoula #Westchester #doula #doulasupport #westchesterdoula #leanonme #compassioninaction #doulasinthekitchen #compassion #postpartum #doulasofinstagram

One aspect of being a postpartum doula is interacting with the pets of my clients. Today, I literally Laughed Out Loud when one of my client's dogs came running into the kitchen with this toy in her mouth. I also very much appreciate a client with such a sense of humor. As a postpartum doula, attention to detail is very important when it comes to taking care of a newborn baby... However, I also pay close attention to the mother's needs as well... My client requested that I substitute chocolate chips for walnuts in a pumpkin muffin recipe so that she can snack on them like it's something to support her well-being and energy rather than a treat. I could have easily just thrown in a half cup of walnuts, mixed it in and called it a day... But it's my attention to detail that reminded me to break up each walnut so that my client would find a piece in every bite. This is the level of service I offer as a postpartum doula.
